Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka a premier Health Science University in India was established on 1st June 1996 at Bangalore by the Govt. of Karnataka through its enactment of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka Act 1994 to encompass all the existing health science colleges and institutions which were earlier affiliated to the conventional universities in Karnataka with a purpose of ensuring proper and systematic instruction, teaching, training and research in modern and Indians systems of medicine.

RGUHS is first in its many folds such as: development of comprehensive structured curriculum for all the academic degrees and programs of health science disciplines being offered under its umbrella, establishing the State - of - the art Digital Library and HELINET Consortium to provide scholarly International medical literature of e-journals, e-books, databases, dissertations, thesis and previous examination question papers etc, with round the clock virtual access to all the students, teachers and researchers in their institutions affiliated to RGUHS in Karnataka, Computerization of examination systems, publishing of RGUHS scientific journals in the facilities of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Ayurveda etc, Promotion of NSS and sports activities and establishment of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Public Health.

RGUHS has the larger affiliation of 757 health science institutions offering various academic programs in the faculties of Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Nursing, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Unani, Naturopathy & Yogic Sciences, Siddha, Physiotherapy, Public Health and Health Science Librarianship such as Under Graduate, Post Graduate, Post Graduate Diploma, Super Specialty, Ph.D and Fellowship courses covering 1.3 lakhs of students in the State of Karnataka.

ರಾಜೀವ್ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಗಳ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಲಾಂಛನವು ಪೂರ್ವ ಮತ್ತು ಪಾಶ್ಚಿಮಾತ್ಯ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಗಳ ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಸಂಬಂಧದ ಸಂಕೇತದ ದ್ಯೋತಕವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಕ್ಕೊಂದು ಬೆಸೆದುಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಹಾವುಗಳು ಗ್ರೀಕ್ ಹಾಗೂ ರೋಮನ್ ಸಂಸ್ಕøತಿಯ ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ದೇವತೆಗಳಾದ ಹರ್ಮಿಸ್ ಮತ್ತು ಮಕ್ರ್ಯುರಿ – ಆಧುನಿಕ ವೈದ್ಯ ಪದ್ದತಿಯ ಸಂಕೇತವಾಗಿವೆ.
ಮೇಲ್ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸುವ ಕಳಶವು ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಗಳ ಪಿತೃವೆಂದೇ ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ ಧನ್ವಂತರಿಯ ಅಮೃತ ಕಳಶವಾಗಿದೆ
ಕಳಶದ ಮೇಲ್ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣುವ ಹಂಸ ರೆಕ್ಕೆಗಳು ಭಾರತೀಯ ತತ್ವಜ್ಞಾನದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಮಾನವ ಆತ್ಮದ ಸಂಕೇತವಾಗಿದೆ.
ಎಲ್ಲಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮೇಲ್ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಲ್ಪಡುವ ಉದಯಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಅರಿವಿನ ಸಂಕೇತವಾಗಿದೆ.

The Emblemof the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences is a symbolic expression of the confluence of both Eastern and Western Health Sciences.
A Central Wand with Entwined snakes:symbolizes Greek and Roman Gods of Health called Hermes and Mercury is adapted as symbol of modern Medical Sciences.
The Potabove depicts Amrutha Kalasham of Dhanvanthri the father of all Health sciences.
The Wingsabove it depict Human soul called Hamsa (Swan) in Indian Philosophy.
The Rising Sun at the top symbolizes knowledge and enlightment.
The Two Twigs of Leavesin Western Philosophy symbolize Olive branches which is an express of Peace, Love and Harmony. In Hindu Philosophy it depicts the Vanaspathi (also called as Aushadi) held in the hands of Dhanvanthri, which are the sources of all medicines.
The Lamp at the bottom depicts human energy (kundalini).
The Script “Devahitham Yadayahu”inside the lamp is taken from Upanishath Shanthi Manthram (Bhadram Karnebhi Shrunuyanadev) Which says “May we Live the full span of our lives allotted by God in perfect Health” which is the motto of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.
